For some reason we were struggling to get a squad together for the start of the season lads were turning up for training and friendly matches but were not signing on but eventually we got the fifteen players signed within seven days before the start of the season but we still could not get a squad together for our first game so we had to cancel which meant a £45 fine and one point deducted even before we started our season . Our first game against Greenhill who was probably one of the favourites to win the league we thrashed them 5-0 Ross Locker neting 4.Our next two games were cup games and for both of them we really did struggle again to field a teams our first was against Bottesford in the Cobbin Trophy we held them to a 2-2 draw but lost 6-5 on penalties. The next week we were away to Friar Lane & Epworth Res in the County Court with nearly enough completely different team we were winning 3-1 at half-time but they made 3 substitutions and they turned the game around completely and we eventually went down 5-3. We were now back to league action and in our next four league games even though we were still struggling to field a settled squad with at least 3 or 4 changes each game and usually with the bear 11 we managed to win 2 and draw 2.By this time though our manager Craig Dawson felt it was time for him to step down as he could not take the club any further. This put the club in a desperate position to weather it was worth carry on. Paul Gunn who was one of the founder members of Falcons said he would not let the club fold and he would take on the manages position along with Steven Moult as is assistant.They managed to get some new players Signed on quite quickly and we went on from November 8th to the end of the season playing 19 games winning 13 drawing 3 and only losing 3 games and with a bit of look we should have got a point when losing games and should have won the games we drew we could have easily ended runners-up but in the end we were quite happy to finish fifth in the league. Our cup games as stated above the Cobbin Trophy and the County Court were disasters and the less said the better the.League decided that they would have a Premier Cup this season and split the league into 2 groups of 5 how group was Greenhill Thringstone Kegworth Sutton Bonington and ourselves we went on to win all 4 games we topped the league and Greenhill came second in the other group Shelthorpe and Loughborough FC top their group we played Loughborough in the semi-final winning them 2-0 and Greenhill beat Shelthorpe in the other semi-final. Final was played at Shepshed ground on a Thursday night again we had probably 2 of our best players out but within 3 min we went 1-0 up through Aaron Sweeney from then on there was not a great deal of football played by either team it resulted in long balls and we held out to come away with the Premier Cup . So all in all a bit of a up and down season starting off with the uncertainty whether we would be carrying on and ending with the a trophy a well-known manager once said football is a funny old game and how right he was |
